500 North/Fairpark Traffic Calming Measures: Request for Qualifications

Public art project located on 500 North and 1300 West/1200 West Intersections, Salt Lake City, Utah | City Council District 1

The Salt Lake City Arts Council is pleased to announce an opportunity for Utah artists or artist-led teams to submit qualifications for the 500 North/Fairpark Traffic Calming Measures public art opportunity. The Salt Lake Art Design Board strives to commission an artwork that reflects the history, identity, diversity, and spirity of the Fairpark neighborhood by resonating with the local community and fostering a sense of inclusion and belonging.

In response to concerns from area residents, Salt Lake City recently installed a series of traffic calming measures in the Fairpark neighborhood on 500 North between Redwood Road and 1200 West. A traffic circle at 1300 West & 500 North was created from that project and it will now be the site for a new piece of public art, thanks to funding provided by the Salt Lake City Arts Council’s Public Art Program. Additionally, the three splitter islands recently installed on 1200 West & 500 North have been identified as an additional potential site for public art. The primary site for an artwork installation is the traffic circle situated at 500 North 1300 West. In addition to the traffic circle, artists will be invited to consider proposing artwork for the three traffic splitter islands located at 500 North 1200 West.

The Arts Council is grateful to the more than 200 Salt Lake City residents, particularly those from the Fairpark neighborhood, who participated on our Community Engagement Survey for this project. Your responses and participation has helped the Public Art Program develop a project that will result in the commissioning an artwork that will aim to reflect the unique character of the Fairpark neighborhood. COMMISION BUDGET: $55,000 (total budget)

DEADLINE: Wednesday, September 20, 2023 by 5:00 pm MST (please note that this application closes BEFORE midnight)

ELIGIBILITY: This Call for Artists is open to all professional artists or artist-led teams currently residing in the Utah regardless of race, religion, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, national origin, age, religion, marital status, political opinion or affiliation, or mental or physical disability.
