Works In Progress

Exciting changes are coming to Out of the Blue — affectionately known as “The Whale.” Stephen Kesler’s iconic sculpture, located at the roundabout in the heart of Salt Lake City’s 9th and 9th neighborhood, will receive a new mural next summer! The current mural, Point of Reference by Mike Murdock, has transformed the sculpture into a strong symbol of community, creativity, resilience, and harmony. This iconic sculpture will be repainted every 3–5 years to reflect the energy and vibrancy of the neighborhood. Created by Salt Lakers for Salt Lakers, the rotating mural program brings new stories, styles, and perspectives to Out of the Blue, helping it stay fresh, relevant, and rooted in the community.

Stay up to date on this project, by signing up for the Salt Lake City Arts Council Newsletter or by following the Public Art Program @slc_publicartprogram.
